Missing Misogyny
...the full impact
If you spend enough time on Twitter, you've probably come across the word Misogyny. I can argue that Misogyny is one of the most misunderstood words, especially around this part of the world.
When asked to define misogyny, Chatgpt defined it as the hatred or prejudice against women, often resulting in discrimination and devaluation of their contributions.
Just a mumble of English words right? I agree.
I have deluded myself into believing that the reason why most do not support the idea of feminism is because of a lack of comprehension of what misogyny can be and its impact on the lives of many. Allow me to be the bearer of light and bring this issue into perspective with some genuine scenarios.
Let me start with the reason that prompted me to write this piece in the first place. In an interview with Korty, Tems revealed that she would purposefully wear baggy clothes to prevent the men in the studios she came to work in and learn from being attracted to her. She wore clothes she was not comfortable in to ensure that the work she needed to get done -got done. Personally, I'm the kind of person who doesn't feel okay stepping out in clothes I'm not comfortable in and this is a problem a lot of women face at their workplace. Sometimes it's not just clothes. Women alter their personalities, makeup, hairstyles and many other things to seem less attractive to men they need.
A certain woman on Twitter shared that she approved all the parts for a Range Rover recently -true or not I don't know and a certain man commented “All of you should keep pretending as if we don't know that 90% of women at the top slept their way there”, yup you read right. Forget that it's one man, a lot of people, men and women alike think this way. “She uses an iPhone, I wonder how many men she slept with to buy it”, It is almost as if women are incapable of working hard to achieve success and can only do it in the favour of a man.
This one is just me being petty but when a young boy says he has a crush on his female teacher it is considered harmless and a lot of the times very cute but when a young girl ever hints a slight favouritism towards a male teacher there is a very high chance she is going to walk out of that situation assaulted.
When campaigning against the recent complaints of sex for grades in universities, a certain male Twitter user stated that he could not even imagine any teacher trying to seduce him and he would succumb. Every woman reading this can attest to how persistent men can be when in search of what they desire. Be it resulting to insulting a girl who ignores your catcalling to becoming violent to women who refuse to hand you their number on the road. Men do not realise how much danger we put ourselves in when we say No and sometimes how much danger we avoid when we say yes.
I can go on and on but I think we all need to start having more grace for women and feminists especially.
We do not seek respect, we demand it.
I started this newsletter and I apologise firstly to myself and then to all my readers future and present. I want to write this consistently so I get better at writing and also share a story while i’m at it. I hope you stick around, subscribe and leave a comment. I promise to be more consistent.
Something that sparked joy in me this week was meeting my mentor in person for the first time and a cup of a vanilla coffee.
I love you and stay positive.
